Pssst! Yea you, come here! Wanna know a secret?

March 7, 2010

No? Too bad, I’ma tell you anyway.

Don’t wash your hair every day. That does not mean you shouldn’t shower every day. No one is asking you to become the smelly kid in class.

Shampoo dries out hair. I know, duh. But what you may not know is the reason your hair becomes oily so quickly is because your body is over compensating for the dryness shampoo causes. Basically, washing your hair daily makes it greasy. Worst oxymoron ever.

Maybe remedying greasy hair is not Britney's first priority...

So skip the sudsy stuff and only shampoo every-other day. If your locks need a little freshening up in between hair baths, try using a dry shampoo. Many dry shampoos are, essentially, baby powder. Don’t fall for pretty packaging (as I often do) and pay $40 for a bottle of glorified bottom dust.

"You're going to put WHAT on your hair!?"

Instead, try using Pssst…, an aerosol dry shampoo that you can find at almost any drugstore. It only costs around $5, and the aerosol packaging allows for easy application (a.k.a it won’t turn your hair granny white). Pssst… is also great for float trips, weekend-long concerts, and really, really genuinely dirty human beings.

Tip: Your shampoo could also be causing you to break out along your hairline! Sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates are cheap foaming ingredients used in many shampoos that can irritate skin. Try using products that either don’t contain these, or have them listed towards the bottom of the ingredients information (the closer a chemical is to the top of the list, the more of it the product contains). I recommend Chi’s Clean Start, or if that is too expensive, an all-natural shampoo!

Pssst! absolutely rocks, and is life changing for sure! Take it from someone who looks like she bathed in olive oil if her hair isn’t washed daily–this miracle in an aerosol spray can buy you at least an extra day, if not a few days. Combined with a little deodorant and a fresh makeup application, you’ve cut your getting-ready time down to nothing for those couple of days. Plus, it has a fabulous volumizing and thickening effect, which makes it great to use even if your hair actually is clean. It’s also fantastic to use when you’re too lazy to bathe your child every day and their hair is dirty–keeps those over-achieving moms from trash talking. Definitely try this stuff, and buy two cans because the stores always run out of it really quickly.
